Blunt Amendment was tabled today by vote of 51 to 48 in Senate
This is good. Good news? Eh.
3 people who voted FOR the Blunt Amendment were three supposed Democrats:
- Ben Nelson: from Nebraska, co-sponsor of bill who is, thankfully, retiring
- Bob Casey: from Pennsylvania, who can be reached here (202) 224-6324
- Joe Manchin: from West Virginia, who can be reached here (304) 342-5855
51 to 48. That is so incredibly close. That is just much too close for comfort. I refuse to celebrate that 51 Senators voted to table it when FORTY EIGHT SENATORS OF THE UNITED STATE OF AMERICA voted for it.
Even if this GOP fight against birth control seems like a slam dunk win for liberals, we have to remember two important things:
- People vote against their immediate interests all the time, especially when they feel it’s morally and, especially, religiously imperative.
- It is a pastime in this country to judge women for being the slutty sluts that they are. Even if someone uses birth control or their partners use birth control (or their friends or their children or their parents, etc.), that does not mean that they will not nod along in agreement with the GOP as The Right demonizes those who want access to BC. The only moral birth control is mine own, right? Let’s just say that I am concerned about this. I don’t feel like this is an automatic win. And votes like 51 to 48 in the Senate make me want to barf.
And let’s be PERFECTLY clear about this Blunt Amendment. While I think that the assholes who voted FOR the amendment are doing what they are doing because they are misogynists and think cis women need to be coddled, WHAT they are doing could affect so many more people than jus cis women. (ALL bills that appear to target cis women’s health and reproduction ALWAYS affect more than just cis women)
The Blunt Amendment would have allowed employers to deny coverage for whatever they wanted based on “moral grounds”.
An employer who hates birth control to the point where they will deny covering it would surely not stop there.
And this amendment was NEARLY was held up today by the Senate.
Oh my.
